Modern Sculptures of a European City in the Heart of the Capital City
2006.07.13
Today, Vilnius City Mayor Artūras Zuokas, Ambassador of Portugal A.M. Moreira Tanger Correa and the young Portuguese artist Nuno Vasa unveiled three modern sculptures entitled Possible Dinner in Odminių Square, Vilnius.
Arrival of these sculptures to Vilnius manifests the openness of our city. The works of this young Portuguese artist Nuno Vasa are the first sculptures of a European artist in the very heart of Vilnius City. I have no doubt, that in making preparations to become the European Capital of Culture, more works of European artists will decorate Vilnius in the nearest future, said Vilnius City Mayor Artūras Zuokas.
The kinetic sculptures of Nuno Vasa, the young Portuguese artist, draw spectators into peculiar artistic games. People can take a seat at the three sculptures in the shape of a table with two chairs for a cup of coffee or even a lunch snack, but only two persons can maintain the balance of the sculpture. Persons willing to take a seat at the Possible Dinner table must try together with a partner to maintain the balance, and respond to each other. The balanced form and well-considered communicativeness found in the sculptures of N.Vasa were recognized in his being granted the Velasquez Award, which ensured the artists participation in the prestigious ESTAMPA XIII exhibition in Madrid. The Vilnius City Municipality and Gallery Vartai presented the sculptures to the Vilnius citizens.
